What is Botox and why should I consider it?
Botox is a drug that is synthesized from the bacterium, clostridium botulinum and is actually the same toxin that causes food poisoning or botulism. However, when used in cosmetic surgery and in very small doses, Botox can be very helpful. Doctors use Botox to treat several issues including temporary removal of wrinkles on the face, controlling severe underarm sweating, and the correction of misaligned eyes. In addition to these, Botox has also been used to treat other conditions of the body that benefit from the temporary paralyzing effects of the toxin. Cervical dystonia or the severe muscle contractions of the neck and shoulders, overactive bladder syndrome, and blepharospasm or uncontrollable blinking have also been successfully treated using Botox injections.
How does Botox work?
To be able to effectively eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles, Botox acts by temporarily paralyzing muscle activity, specifically on the areas that are prone to wrinkle formation. The botulinum toxin is able to block certain chemical signals that cause muscle contraction from the nerves, which results in the temporary relaxation of the facial muscles that lie directly under your wrinkles.
What should I expect from a Botox procedure?
After identifying your trouble areas, you may be asked by the doctor if you prefer to have the area numbed before the injections. If you choose to do so, local anesthesia may be injected into your skin, otherwise, a numbing cream or cold spray may be used as well. Once the area has been numbed sufficiently, the doctor will begin to inject tiny amounts of Botox directly into the skin or the underlying muscles where your wrinkles are most evident. The number of injections will depend upon the extent of the area that will be treated. Botox is essentially an outpatient procedure that can be done in minutes in the doctor’s office.
What are the results that I can look forward to with Botox?
The effects of Botox usually begin to show a few days after the treatment. You will notice the wrinkles on your forehead, the frown lines in between your eyebrows, and the crow’s feet from the corners of your eyes begin to fade as the paralyzing effect of the treatment starts to take effect on the underlying muscles. The wonderful wrinkle erasing effects of Botox can last between 3 to 12 months, after which you will need follow-up injections to maintain the desired effect.
