What is Laser Scar Removal?
Laser scar removal is a procedure that dramatically improves the appearance of scars using a pulse-dye laser system, or green light laser, that is able to resolve keloid scarring, hypertrophic scarring, and atrophic scarring. With the laser treatment, the redness and swelling of overactive scars was reduced significantly, along with the pain and sensitivity typically seen with larger scars. After treatment, scars become noticeably less visible, lighter in color, smoother, and softer.
A scar is your body’s way of telling you it’s healing. But, sometimes a scar can be an unsightly embarrassment, no matter the cause:
Whoever said, “Scars are sexy,” may never have had scars before and probably does not know the implication of having them visible, for the entire world to see. Cosmetic experts at the Laser & Mohs Dermatology center in New York City, spearheaded by Dr. Adelle Quintana, do understand and have advocated the use of laser scar removal for patients who wish to improve the appearance of their scars and feel better about themselves.
How does it work?
The pulse dye laser produces a specific intensity of light that will be able to penetrate the skin and the scar tissue and target the new tissues underneath. The lasers act by exerting a dual action on the internal structure of the scar. As the laser light comes in contact with the blood vessels inside the scar, these vessels are sealed, effectively cutting off the blood supply of the scar. At the same time, the heat coming from the laser changes the morphology of the collagen cells inside the scar. The combined result of these two mechanisms is a softer, less sensitive scar that will now appear to be more like normal skin. The number of treatments to achieve the desired results will depend upon the age and position of the scar, as well as the amount of scar tissue present.
Will the scar be completely removed after treatment?
The scar tissues cannot be completely removed, even after laser scar treatment. However, this procedure can make the scar fade enough so that it is hardly visible without close inspection. More aggressive approaches to scar removal may result in the aggravation of the scarring and produce more undesirable results.
Is laser scar removal for me?
Doctors must explain to patients that laser scar removal is not suitable for everyone. If you have underlying skin disorders such as psoriasis or cystic acne, lasers scar removal may not be the ideal process for you. A comprehensive consultation with the doctor is important in determining whether this procedure is right for you or not. Alternative cosmetic and medical treatments are available for patients who wish to remove or cover up scars, and expert recommendation is needed before taking the next steps.
