Chemical Peels 101: 3 Levels of Peels
- Posted on: Nov 30 2013
Chemical peels in Manhattan are offered here at Laser & Mohs Dermatology of New York. The procedure removes dead skin cells and reveals new skin that is smoother, less wrinkled, and has a more even color. There are three levels of peels and the perfect one for you depends on the color and texture of your skin, degree of skin imperfection, and your skin elasticity.
Mild Peel or Lowest Grade Peel
This kind of peel focuses on the surface of the skin and improves skin texture. The procedure usually takes 10 minutes to complete. Once the procedure is done, you will notice your skin look like it has sunburn. It will appear red and dry. You will also peel. Full healing may take up to 5 days. However, mild peels do not have a real downtime, allowing you to go back to your normal life right away.
Medium Peel
This kind of peel treats fine lines, minor skin imperfections, and acne on the surface level. The procedure normally takes 15 minutes and a couple of treatments may be needed. After a medium peel, the skin will appear red and may swell. Your skin will also start to peel.
Deep Peel
As the name suggests, this kind of peel goes to the deeper layers of the skin and is intended for deep wrinkles as well as dark spots that are deeper. Deep peels are also known as phenol peels and are considered intense. It should only be done by a trained and experienced professional. After the procedure, there will be swelling. Makeup cannot be worn for the next two weeks. Avoiding sun exposure for 3 weeks is necessary after a deep peel because the skin is still susceptible to sun damage by this time.
