Sooner or later everyone will have them…fine lines and wrinkles…common rites of passage as we age. There are many cosmetic and surgical options available to address fine lines and wrinkles, but because knowledge is power, it may be helpful to have some simple information about them before you decide on one of Dr. Quintana’s various treatment options.

  • Wrinkles begin with a significant reduction in the levels of collagen and elastin which is produced by your skin. These naturally occurring proteins are responsible for supporting your skin but unfortunately, they decrease with age.
  • Additionally, the other supporting structures of your skin – the ligaments, muscles and bones – weaken with time making your skin loose and prone to sagging.
  • Wrinkle formation is further exacerbated by ultraviolet radiation from years of cumulative exposure to the sun.
  • Other factors that can influence the creation of facial lines and wrinkles are genetics, fat loss, dry climates, frequent muscle contractions and nutritional deficiencies.

Lines are finer than wrinkles and are a result of repeated facial expressions such as smiling, frowning or squinting. Fine lines do not usually form in younger people because they still have sufficient amounts of collagen and elastin to help their skin snap back into place.

Wrinkles are much thicker, deeper and are more noticeable than lines. Often, they are a result of long periods of unprotected sun exposure. And darn it, it’s very common for a fine line to eventually turn into a wrinkle.

Aging is inevitable, but there are things you can do to slow its signs.
