When Spring gets into full swing, we see signs of youthfulness all around us. All of nature is in a state of resurgence, which can prompt us to want a bit of revival for ourselves. Luckily, it is as easy for us to rejuvenate as it is for Mother Nature. Following her cue, we can hop into action against the signs of aging. In our Manhattan office, one way we do this is with Botox. If you’ve been contemplating getting this treatment to refresh your face, we’re happy to help. Here, we discuss what Botox is and what it might do for you.

How Botox Works

You may know that Botox is a powerful wrinkle-reducer. You may also know that this FDA approved drug is called a neurotoxin and that it is derived from a very minute amount of the botulinum toxin. This basic knowledge of Botox sometimes creates apprehension in folks who’ve never had the treatment before. We can understand, botulinum toxin sounds like potentially serious business. Let us see if we can overcome unnecessary fears.

Botulinum toxin was used for many years before the development of Botox. In fact, it was the therapeutic use of relatively large doses of the neuromodulator that led to the discovery of cosmetic benefits. Originally, small amounts of the toxin were injected into muscles affected by various disorders that caused frequent or persistent contractions. One of the first uses of botulinum toxin was to ease blepharospasm, or chronic eyelid twitching. As patients gained relief from their muscle contractions, they also noticed that their faces looked younger.

Botox works by preventing the absorption of the neurotransmitter that causes muscles to contract. Its effects are temporary, lasting 3 to 6 months, and instances of serious side effects are very rare. Most people to get Botox enjoy its rejuvenating effects with little irritation. Side effects are generally limited to mild swelling and redness at injection sites. These fade quickly enough for patients to go right back to their normal activities.

What Botox Can Achieve

Botox injections have become the most popular cosmetic treatment for:

  • Frown lines
  • Worry lines on the forehead
