A scar is a natural part of the healing process, but sometimes we develop scars in areas where we prefer smooth, flawless skin rather than skin that is abnormal in texture and color. Our board certified, experienced dermatologist can help diminish or eliminate your scars with comfortable and easy laser scar removal treatments.
What is Laser Scar Removal?
Laser scar removal is a procedure that dramatically improves the appearance of scars using a pulse-dye laser system, or green light laser, that is able to resolve the following scarring:
- Keloid scarring
- Hypertrophic scarring
- Atrophic scarring
A scar is your body’s way of telling you it’s healing. But, sometimes a scar can be an unsightly embarrassment, no matter the cause:
Benefits of Scar Removal
With the laser treatment, the redness and swelling of overactive scars was reduced significantly, along with the pain and sensitivity typically seen with larger scars. After treatment, scars become noticeably less visible, lighter in color, smoother, and softer.
Am I a Candidate for Laser Scar Removal?
Cosmetic laser technologies allow us to treat scars that may result from:
The scar should be fully healed before you consider having the skin treated, so we recommend that you wait at least six months. This allows the scar to fully mature and may alleviate the need for corrective treatments in the future should the scar continue to change.
Scar Removal Treatment
Scar removal treatment works by resurfacing the skin that is affected by the scar.
For the procedure, we use a hand piece to deliver short bursts of laser energy into the scar tissue.
The pulse dye laser produces a specific intensity of light that will be able to penetrate the skin and the scar tissue and target the new tissues underneath. The lasers act by exerting a dual action on the internal structure of the scar. As the laser light comes in contact with the blood vessels inside the scar, these vessels are sealed, effectively cutting off the blood supply of the scar. At the same time, the heat coming from the laser changes the morphology of the collagen cells inside the scar. The combined result of these two mechanisms is a softer, less sensitive scar that will now appear to be more like normal skin.
You may feel a slight sensation each time the laser is applied, and most patients can remain comfortable during the treatment. The number of treatments to achieve the desired results will depend upon the age and position of the scar, as well as the amount of scar tissue present.
Laser Scar Removal Results
Having realistic expectations of your scar removal treatment ensures that you love the results of the procedure. The goal of laser scar treatments is to closely match the scar to the surrounding skin. This can be achieved to varying degrees based upon the location, characteristics and size of the scar. Our dermatologist explains the expected results of your scar removal procedure during the consultation.
Will the scar be completely removed after treatment?
The scar tissues cannot be completely removed, even after laser scar treatment. However, this procedure can make the scar fade enough so that it is hardly visible without close inspection. More aggressive approaches to scar removal may result in the aggravation of the scarring and produce more undesirable results.
Is laser scar removal for me?
Doctors must explain to patients that laser scar removal is not suitable for everyone. If you have underlying skin disorders such as psoriasis or cystic acne, lasers scar removal may not be the ideal process for you.
A comprehensive consultation with the doctor is important in determining whether this procedure is right for you or not. Alternative cosmetic and medical treatments are available for patients who wish to remove or cover up scars, and expert recommendation is needed before taking the next steps.
Scar Removal Costs
The cost laser scar removal is based upon the type of scar, and this varies by patient. We evaluate your scar at the time of the consultation, and we can then provide cost information.
