The Benefits of Aesthetic Treatments
Our skin is the largest organ in the human body. But it is also the organ that is the most exposed — dealing with constant sun exposure, wind, environmental pollutants, and more. And this exposure eventually shows itself.
Plus, there’s the ongoing passage of time, and it’s not kind to our skin. It loses more and more of its structural support as we age. That’s because our collagen production — collagen is the protein in the body responsible for creating the structural framework under the skin that keeps it firm and young looking — decreases by one additional percentage point every year following our 20th birthday. That means by the age of 50 we have basically a third less collagen to keep our skin firm and taut. That’s why wrinkles, lines, and areas of volume loss develop.
We need to fight back against these forces trying to make our skin look, well, old. That’s the point of our various aesthetic treatments at Laser & Mohs Dermatology: to help our patients look their best by rejuvenating their facial skin through these treatments.
The benefit of this? What’s the benefit of not “looking your age?” What’s the benefit of reversing all those years of sun you’ve exposed your skin to? What’s the benefit of feeling as if you look years, even a decade, younger than your actual age?
These are the benefits of our aesthetic offerings at Laser & Mohs Dermatology.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for an Aesthetic Treatment?
A better question would be “Who isn’t an ideal candidate?” The reality is this: after the age of 40 there isn’t a sole out there who couldn’t use some rejuvenation of their facial skin.
The one question would be the extent of your skin damage. If your damage has created lots of loose, sagging, excess skin, these aesthetic treatments aren’t the answer. You would need a surgical facelift or neck lift, or both. If the eyelids and the area around your eyes is the problem, these aesthetic treatments won’t adequately impact the eye area. You would want to investigate blepharoplasty/eyelid surgery to remove the excess skin and lift the underlying support structures.
How Safe are These Aesthetic Treatments?
These are non-invasive, safe treatments with Dr. Quintana and our team. Aesthetic treatments don’t require any incisions, so there isn’t any risk of infection. There aren’t any incisions and their subsequent scarring. There isn’t any recovery necessary with our aesthetic offerings.
At Laser & Mohs Dermatology of New York our variety of aesthetic treatments are easy to take, simple, and non-invasive. All you have to lose is some of that aging on your face and hands.
How do Your Aesthetic Treatments Work to Improve my Skin?
As mentioned above, these are completely non-invasive treatments. Their sole goal is to make your skin look younger, taking years off your facial age.
Our dermal fillers and neuromodulators are all FDA approved for the specific areas they target. These sessions take just a few minutes and can erase signs of aging across the face and the backs of the hands. Everything from crow’s feet at the outside of the eyes to smile lines that run from your nose down to the corners of your mouth can be erased or thoroughly decreased in appearance with these injectables. Even the backs of our hands, a notorious place that shows extensive aging through thinning skin and elevated tendons and blood vessels, can benefit from returning volume with Restylane Lyft or Radiesse injections.
Chemical peels simply help the exfoliation process along. Exfoliation is the key to the turnover of skin cells, which is the key to younger looking skin. By applying a peeling agent (usually naturally occurring acids such as glycolic acid from grapes in our light peels to trichloroacetic acid in moderate peels) to our skin, this breaks down some of the bonds in the skin allowing for older, damaged skin cells to slough off in the days following your peel. These skin cells are then replaced by new, healthier skin. Again, these are non-invasive, straightforward treatments that improve the appearance of your facial skin.
On our legs and feet, no one likes the appearance of the squiggly clusters of purple, blue, and red lines — spider veins. Spider veins form due to weakening blood vessel walls and decreasing strength in the support tissues around those blood vessels. They are common with the passing years and don’t hurt or lead to any long-term issues. But they are completely unwelcome when we’re donning a swimsuit to head out to Long Island or shorts for a round of golf. Sclerotherapy is a simple, effective way to instantly remove your spider veins. First developed in the 1930s, this injection of a sclerosant agent (usually a saline solution) removes spider veins instantly and it takes just minutes to do. Plus, there isn’t a minute of downtime afterwards. What’s not to love?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and microneedling have been mainstays of the aesthetic world for a couple decades, but they may be new to you. Professional athletes have used highly concentrated blood platelets, platelet-rich plasma, to aid in healing after injury or surgery since the early part of this century. Now our patients from the New. York area can use the same PRP for skin rejuvenation.
Microneedling puts the body’s natural healing mechanisms to work improving the skin. By initiating hundreds of tiny injuries to the skin (so tiny they heal in just a couple hours), microneedling triggers the body’s wound-healing processes to kick into gear, although the wounds are so tiny they are healed long before this increase in collagen even begins. As the collagen production ramps up, your skin becomes thicker, firmer, and younger looking.
How Will I Choose the Right Aesthetic Treatment to fit my Needs?
At Laser & Mohs Dermatology of New York, Dr. Quintana and her team are the experts with our treatments, both general dermatology and cosmetic/aesthetic dermatology. They know the goal of each of our aesthetic treatments, and they know which of these treatments can fit your skin rejuvenation needs.
During your consultation with Dr. Quintana, they will examine the areas you’re concerned about. From there, they can recommend the aesthetic treatment or treatments needed to rejuvenate those areas.
Can you Combine Aesthetic Treatments?
Most of these treatments can be combined, allowing you to get the most out of a single appointment at our offices on located on 5th Avenue and 42nd Street in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. For instance, we can inject Botox or Dysport to erase your frown lines and then use a Juvéderm or Restylane filler to erase your marionette lines or parentheses lines. Neuromodulators and dermal fillers work in different manners in different areas of the face, so they work well together.
The same would be true for a chemical peel to remove old, dull skin from your face combined with Radiesse injections to the backs of your hands to return lost volume.
The only treatments you wouldn’t want to combine would be those targeting and working on the same areas. For instance, you wouldn’t combine a chemical peel with microneedling, as they work on the facial skin and have similar goals.
If you’re interested in combining different aesthetic treatments at Laser & Mohs Dermatology, let’s talk about your options during your consultation.
