in New York City
We all want lips that are plump, shapely, and ultimately kissable. The reality is…not so much. Most of us never had the lips we see on movie stars. Plus, as we age our lips
thin, lose color and develop vertical lines.
Injecting thin, shapeless lips with dermal fillers isn’t a new idea, but most of us aren’t interested in over-plumped, showy, awards to show lips. If we’re going to add some volume to our lips, we want subtle shape and volume, and we want your old lip color back.
That sounds as if you then need to stop by our offices on 42nd Street because, at Laser & Mohs Dermatology of New York, we now offer Restylane Kysse.
What is Restylane Kysse?
Restylane Kysse is the newest addition to the popular Restylane line of dermal fillers. Kysse is a clear injectable gel composed of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar in the human body that is responsible for hydrating and plumping the skin. It does this by binding with nearby water molecules.
Restylane Kysse is specifically meant for use on the lips. Once injected, Kysse adds fullness to the lips and it helps smooth wrinkles on and above the upper lip (perioral or barcode lines).
Who is a good candidate for Restylane Kysse?
Restylane Kysse is meant to complement Restylane Silk, which was also developed for the lips. Silk is meant to provide more volume, while Kysse is intended to add soft, subtle volume to the lips, while also smoothing wrinkles around the mouth, and enhancing lip color.
If you don’t like the barcode lines that have formed on your lips and just above them, Kysse is a great option. Kysse provides subtle volume that isn’t showy but is satisfying for patients. Research has also shown that less Kysse is required to attain the amount of volume increase that patients seek when compared to other fillers.
It is available for patients over the age of 21.

How is Restylane Kysse different?
The well-known aesthetic company Galderma is the manufacturer of Kysse. The company says Kysse is the first dermal filler to be equipped with Optimal Balance Technology, also known as XpresHAn Technology. This technology enables Kysse to integrate into the tissues in the injected areas to achieve a more natural look.
Like all Restylane fillers, Kysse is a hyaluronic acid filler. Hyaluronic acid’s job is to plump and hydrate the skin. In the other Restylane fillers, hyaluronic acid accomplishes this by binding with nearby water molecules.
XpressHAn Technology changes this slightly, which is important in the lips because our lips have so many nerves. Sometimes lip fillers like Silk, Voluma (Juvéderm), or Volbella (Juvéderm) can have a tendency to feel a bit uncomfortable or be difficult to get used to. They can create a feeling there is some attached to your lips.
Kysse is different. Galderma says the XpressHAn Technology makes it feel more natural. This is because the hyaluronic acid in Kysse is bound to itself, so it stretches and then goes back to its prior space. What does this mean? When you’re talking, smiling, or kissing, it has the ability to integrate into the tissue where it’s injected and mold to it. This makes Kysse quite seamless with your lips.
How long will my results last with Restylane Kysse?
When gaining FDA approval for Kysse, Galderma was able to show that Kysse provided volume, definition, and color enhancement for up to one year. This is a marked improvement over other fillers for the lips, which tend to last between 3 and 6 months. This is due to the extensive movements made throughout the day with our lips. The XpresHAn Technology formulated into Kysse handles that movement without degrading.
Restylane Kysse Before & After
How does Restylane Kysse compare with Juvéderm for lip volume?
Both of these fillers are hyaluronic acid fillers. When injected to replace lost volume, hyaluronic acid binds with nearby water molecules to plump the area. In the lips, added volume needs to be manageable. Otherwise, our lips can look artificially overstuffed. That’s hard to manage with traditional Juvéderm.
But Kysse is different as described above. The hyaluronic acid in Kysse binds to itself, rather than to any nearby water molecules. This keeps the volume increase from being too much. The molecules tend to bind together and integrate into the lip tissues more naturally. This is important because we move our lips in such subtle ways.
How many treatments are needed with Restylane Kysse?
You’ll only need a single treatment with this new lip filler. After that, Kysse gives your lips that kissable volume for about one year. At that point, another visit to Laser & Mohs Dermatology can maintain your new lips.
What happens during an injection session with Restylane Kysse?
These sessions only take a few minutes. We first numb your lips with lidocaine. Then Dr. Quintana injects Kysse with a very fine needle into various areas of your lips and behind any wrinkles above your upper lip. Dr. Quintana typically handles these injections herself, ensuring you’ll love your kissable results. After your session, you can get right back to work or your other normal activities.
Can I combine a Kysse session with other treatments?
These injection sessions with Dr. Quintana at Laser & Mohs Dermatology of New York can be combined with just about any of the treatments we provide. These can be our numerous aesthetic treatments, such as fractional laser skin resurfacing or chemical peels, or they can be combined with a general dermatology procedure, such as having your skin checked for skin cancer. These treatments are completely localized in the lip area and are not affected by other treatments, so you can combine treatments and save time.
