Three Things You Need to Know about Botox
- Posted on: Aug 15 2017
As one of the leading cosmetic treatments of all time (so it seems, anyway), Botox is a well-known method of reducing wrinkles on the face. You would think that we all know all there is to know about this minimally-invasive treatment, but the prevalence of misconceptions continues to prove otherwise. Dr. Quintana performs Botox, as well as Dysport, treatments on a regular basis. Our patients are served with a friendly, professional attitude and a commitment to up-to-date information. Here, we bust through a few myths that may create confusion.
#1 Botox is a treatment for older individuals.
In reality, Botox treatments are beginning earlier and earlier. Doctors and their patients have come to realize that the gentle relaxation of muscle movements in the face can have a great preventive effect. The more lines become engraved in the skin, the more difficult it is to smooth them, even with such an amazing product as Botox. Some say that the preventive use of Botox can even “teach” us not to make certain facial expressions that cause lines, such as raising the eyebrows or frowning. Then, less care is needed in the future to manage aging skin.
#2 Botox should be started as early as possible.
There may be a great deal of value in starting the process of skin management at an early age, but that does not mean that an 18 or 19-year-old is in need of Botox. A good rule of thumb would be to create a personalized skin care routine during the teen years and to make sure that sunscreen is included in that routine. When lines and wrinkles start to become slightly noticeable when certain facial expressions are made, then you might consult with Midtown Manhattan dermatologist Dr. Quintana about proper treatment.
#3 Wrinkles will look worse after Botox wears off.
The effectiveness of the Botox solution lasts about four months. After this time, all that happens is that the lines and wrinkles that were already there start to become visible again. Will these lines get worse? Yes, over time. A lot of time. This is the natural progression of aging, not a result of ending cosmetic treatment. In fact, many patients notice that, when they obtain Botox at regular intervals, the return of lines occurs later.
